How an NPN Transistor Is Biased
The three leads are the emitter, base and collector. For amplifier work the base–emitter junction is forward biased, with the base slightly positive with respect to the emitter, and the collector–base junction is reverse biased, with the collector more positive still. A small base current then controls a much larger collector current; the ratio IC/IB is the current gain, β or hFE. Given enough base current, the transistor turns fully on and works as a switch, for example to light an LED from a timer output.
Keeping Within the Ratings
The power turned into heat is roughly VCE × IC, and it must stay below 625 mW, so a transistor carrying a large collector current can have only a small voltage across it. The collector current itself should not exceed 0.6 A. Put a resistor in the base lead to limit the base current, and identify the emitter, base and collector from the type number before wiring it in.
