What Is the Heart Model Used For?
The human heart has four chambers — two atria above and two ventricles below — and drives two circuits at once. In the pulmonary circulation the right ventricle pumps blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, and oxygen-rich blood returns through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium. In the systemic circulation the left ventricle sends that blood out through the aorta to the body, and it comes back through the venae cavae to the right atrium. Because blood passes through the heart twice in each complete circuit, this is called double circulation.
