What Is the Abdomen Section Used For?
A horizontal slice shows the abdominal organs in their true positions relative to one another. Cutting at the omental foramen places the slice at the opening between the two peritoneal sacs, so sections at this level are used to explain the peritoneum and the lesser sac.

What is the omental foramen?
It is the opening, also called the epiploic foramen or foramen of Winslow, through which the greater sac of the peritoneal cavity communicates with the lesser sac behind the stomach. The free edge of the lesser omentum, carrying the portal vein, hepatic artery and bile duct, forms its front wall; the inferior vena cava lies behind it, the caudate lobe of the liver above and the first part of the duodenum below.
