What Is the Fetal Circulation Model Used For?
Before birth the lungs are not yet used for breathing, so the fetus gets its oxygen from the mother through the placenta. Oxygen-rich blood arrives through the umbilical vein, three short cuts — the ductus venosus, the foramen ovale and the ductus arteriosus — let much of it bypass the liver and the lungs, and the umbilical arteries carry blood back to the placenta. A model of this route helps students compare it with the circulation after birth.
