How does the fetal circulation differ from the circulation after birth?
Before birth the placenta, not the lungs, supplies oxygen, so much of the blood bypasses the lungs through the foramen ovale and the ductus arteriosus. When the newborn starts to breathe, the lungs expand, these openings close and blood begins to flow through the lungs.
