Ovary, Tube and Uterus
Each ovary holds developing follicles, releases an egg at ovulation and secretes oestrogen and progesterone. The egg is swept into the fallopian (uterine) tube, where fertilisation usually happens. The uterus, a muscular organ lined by the endometrium, receives the embryo at implantation; if no pregnancy follows, the lining is shed in menstruation. The cervix opens into the vagina, which forms the birth canal.
