What Is the Human Spinal Cord Chart Used For?

The spinal cord is the part of the central nervous system that continues down from the medulla oblongata through the vertebral canal, protected by the vertebrae, the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid. It ends in the upper lumbar region, and pairs of spinal nerves leave it between neighbouring vertebrae. Cut across, it shows a butterfly-shaped core of grey matter, made of nerve cell bodies, surrounded by white matter, the bundles of fibres that carry signals up to the brain and down to the muscles. Sensory fibres enter through the dorsal root, which carries a ganglion, and motor fibres leave through the ventral root.

The cord also handles reflexes on its own. In a reflex arc a receptor sends a signal along a sensory neuron to a relay neuron in the cord, which passes it straight to a motor neuron and the muscle — so a hand is pulled away from a hot object, or the leg kicks in the knee-jerk test, before the brain is aware of it. In India the reflex arc and spinal cord are taught in the class 10 science chapter on control and coordination and again in class 11 biology under neural control and coordination; the chart also suits nursing and physiotherapy lessons on why a spinal injury affects sensation and movement below its level. The listing does not itemise the diagrams on this chart, so ask JLab for an image of the current print before ordering.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 charts, supplied individually.
  • Print check — ask for an image of the current print to confirm the diagrams suit your syllabus.
  • Models — a magnified spinal cord model or a spinal cord and vertebra section model can be quoted alongside.
  • Finish — lamination and hanging rods are not part of this listing; say if you need them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Human Spinal Cord Chart used for?
Teaching the structure of the spinal cord, the spinal nerves and the reflex arc in school biology, college physiology, nursing and physiotherapy courses.

What size is the chart and what is it printed on?
It measures 70 x 100 cm (about 27.6 x 39.4 in) and is printed in original colours on synthetic paper. Labels are in English only.

Which diagrams are printed on it?
The listing does not itemise them. Ask JLab for an image of the current print, which will show whether it has, for example, a cross-section or a reflex arc diagram.

Is the spinal cord the same as the spine?
No. The spine, or vertebral column, is the chain of bones; the spinal cord is the nerve tissue running inside its canal. This chart is about the cord, and JLab lists separate spinal column models for the bones.

What does JLab need for an export quotation?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling instructions, and a tender reference if there is one.

Who supplies the Human Spinal Cord Chart?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab in Ambala, Haryana, supplies it and quotes for it directly.

Supplier

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It supplies human physiology charts such as this spinal cord chart along with its own range of anatomy models and school laboratory equipment, so a biology or nursing department can source charts and models together, and every chart is visually inspected before packing. JLab exports worldwide and can supply buyers in every region — for instance Yemen in the Middle East, Germany in Western Europe, Tunisia in North Africa, Rwanda in East Africa and Cameroon in Central Africa. Tender buyers will find details on the JLab lab tenders page.

  • Model of Human Spinal Cord — a magnified spinal cord with nerve endings, its base showing cross-sections through the white and grey matter at different levels.
  • Human Spinal Cord and Vertebra — an expanded transverse-section model of the cord inside a vertebra, in two parts on a base.
  • Human Spinal Column Model — a life-size spine with pelvis, spinal cord, spinal nerves and vertebral artery, on a metal stand.
  • Nervous System Chart — the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the whole body on a 70 x 100 cm chart.
  • Human Brain Chart — the brain that the spinal cord connects to, in the same chart size.
