Setting the Flame and Putting It Out
Adjust the flame before lighting by pulling the wick through the collar: more exposed wick gives a taller flame, less gives a smaller one. Light it with a match or lighter, never from another burner. To put it out, lower the metal cap straight over the flame, which cuts off the air; leaving the cap on between uses also stops the spirit evaporating.
Refilling Safely
Refill only when the flame is out and the burner has cooled, and wipe up any spilt spirit before relighting. A spirit flame is pale and hard to see in bright light, so keep the lit burner where it cannot be knocked over and never carry it while it is burning.
