Moments and the Three Classes of Lever
With the pivot at the centre, masses on either side balance when their moments are equal: each load multiplied by its distance from the pivot gives the same product on both sides, the principle of moments. Moving the pivot off-centre makes the lever’s own weight act at a distance from the pivot, so its moment must be counted in the balance. In a first-class lever the pivot lies between effort and load. A second-class lever has the load between pivot and effort, letting a small effort hold a larger load, while in a third-class lever the effort acts between pivot and load and the load moves further than the effort.
