Finding a Point on the Line
Ranging rods are first set at the two ends of the line. Standing roughly on the line, the surveyor holds the ranger and looks into it: one mirror or prism shows the rod at one end and the other shows the rod at the opposite end. The surveyor moves sideways until the two images appear in one vertical line, and that position, now on the line, is marked.
