What Is the Lobule and Alveolus Model Used For?
It explains gas exchange at two scales. A lobule is a small unit of lung tissue served by its own branch of the airway and of the pulmonary vessels. The alveolus model then follows blood from an arteriole through the capillaries to a venule over the thin epithelial cover where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged; the elastic fibres in its wall are what let the lung recoil when we breathe out.

Because they differ so much in real size. A single alveolus is only a fraction of a millimetre across, so it needs far more enlargement than the lobule for the structure of its wall to be seen.
