What Is the Magnetic Retriever Used For?
When a solution is mixed on a magnetic stirrer, the stirring bar ends up lying at the bottom of the beaker or flask, often in a hot, corrosive or strongly coloured liquid. The retriever is dipped into the solution when mixing is finished and pulled out with the stirring bar held on by its magnet, which keeps fingers and tongs out of the vessel and stops the bar being lost down the sink. Alnico V is a permanent magnet alloy of aluminium, nickel and cobalt with iron, and PTFE resists almost all laboratory chemicals. Retrievers are a routine bench item wherever magnetic stirrers are used: college and university chemistry labs, pharmacy and biology labs, and research and quality-control laboratories.
