What Is the Max & Min Thermometer Used For?

It answers a question an ordinary thermometer cannot: how hot and how cold did it get while nobody was watching? In the usual (Six’s) design, the liquid in the bulb expands and contracts with temperature and pushes the mercury column along the two scales, and small markers called indices are left at the highest and lowest points until they are reset. Students use it to record daily maximum and minimum temperatures in class 7 weather lessons and class 11 geography practicals on weather instruments; it also keeps watch on greenhouses, seed stores and cold rooms.

Mount it upright, out of direct sun, and read both scales at the same time each day before resetting. Because it contains mercury, handle it carefully, follow your laboratory’s mercury-spill procedure if the glass breaks, and check your country’s rules on mercury-containing instruments before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it record the maximum and minimum temperature?
On two scales: the mercury column, moved by the liquid in the bulbs, sets markers at the highest and lowest temperatures reached, which stay there until reset.

What temperature range does it cover?
The listing does not give the range or the scale units. State what you need, quoting code EL-ELA-5377, and JLab will confirm before quoting.

Is a mercury-free version available?
Yes, JLab lists a Mercury Free Max Min Thermometer separately, linked above, for buyers who cannot use mercury.

Who manufactures this thermometer?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of school science, geography and weather-study equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The thermometer is made at JLab’s own works, not sourced from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order from the maker and repeat orders follow the same specification. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the Maldives in South Asia, Tonga in Oceania, France in Western Europe, the USA in North America and Gabon in Central Africa. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
