What Each Stain and Reagent Does
Carmine dissolved in acetic acid gives aceto-carmine, the usual stain for chromosomes in squash preparations. Neutral red is a vital stain taken up by living cells, methyl green colours nuclei, and safranin stains nuclei and lignified cell walls red. Lugol’s solution turns starch blue-black, and Giemsa stock solution is diluted for staining blood smears. Glycerin, or a saline made from the sodium chloride and distilled water, serves for temporary mounts. For a permanent slide the specimen is dehydrated through the ethanol grades, cleared with the clearing agent and mounted in Canada balsam.
The Prepared Slide Series
Alongside the chemicals come ready-made slide series: a general biology basic series and a supplementary set, a short zoology series on protozoa, a series on water pollution, freshwater microorganisms and smear slides of human spermatozoa. Each of the first three comes with its own storage box.
