What Are These Microtome Accessories Used For?

A microtome cuts tissue that has been embedded in paraffin wax into very thin sections, which are floated onto glass slides, stained and examined under a microscope. These accessories cover the work around the cut. The stainless steel mesh cassette holds a tissue piece while it passes through fixing, dehydrating and clearing fluids. For embedding, two L-moulds are set together on a flat glass or metal surface to form a rectangular well, molten paraffin is poured in and the specimen is oriented inside; when the wax sets, the L-pieces are pulled apart and the block is trimmed and clamped in the microtome’s object holder. Choosing the L-mould spacing lets you cast a small, medium or large block to suit the specimen.

Clean sections depend on a keen edge, so the razor is first honed on the stone or on the glass honing plate and then finished on the leather strop, where it is drawn back-first with the edge trailing. Wipe the razor dry after use and return it to its wooden box so the edge is not knocked. This kind of biology lab equipment is used in histology and pathology teaching, botany and zoology departments of colleges and universities, and research labs that prepare their own slides.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this listing include?
It names a microtome razor, a leather strop, a honing stone, a glass honing plate, L-moulds and a tissue cassette, one of each, with the razor in one of three sizes. Tell JLab whether you want the whole group or only certain items so the quotation matches your need.

What sizes is the microtome razor made in?
120 mm, 140 mm and 160 mm. The razor is made from grain tool steel that is heat treated and tested for microstructure, is wedge-shaped on both sides, has a back and handle, and is kept in a wooden box.

What size wax blocks can the L-moulds make?
The listing gives 37 x 25 x 15 mm, 50 x 25 x 15 mm and 75 x 30 x 15 mm as examples. The L-moulds work in pairs, and their placement sets the size of the block.

Will the razor fit my microtome?
The listing does not name the microtome models it fits. Send the make and model of your microtome, or the knife length its holder takes, and JLab will advise which razor size to order.

Is a microtome included?
No. This listing covers the accessories only; rotary and hand microtomes, object holders and the embedding bath are separate catalogue items, linked below.

What should an export enquiry include?
The items and razor size, the quantity, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling instructions, and a tender reference if one applies.

Who manufactures these accessories?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes them at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for them directly.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a laboratory apparatus manufacturer in India that was incorporated in 2017 and works from Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The razor, strop, honing plate, moulds and cassette on this page come from JLab’s own works, not from a trader, so colleges, research labs, dealers and importers deal with the maker directly; every accessory is visually inspected before packing, and replacement razors or strops on repeat orders are handled by the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region, for example Algeria in North Africa, Afghanistan in South Asia, Oman in the Middle East, Eswatini in Southern Africa and Congo in Central Africa. Institutional buyers can find tender details on the JLab lab tenders page.

Microtomes and Section-Cutting Equipment

  • Microtome Razor — a separate sectioning razor listing; ask about using a safety blade in its place.
  • Microtome Object Holder — listed as a set of three object holders for rotary microtomes, to clamp the wax blocks.
  • Paraffin Embedding Bath — a thermostat-controlled bath with covered wax pots for melting paraffin before embedding.
  • Rotary Microtome — a bench microtome for cutting thin, evenly spaced sections of embedded specimens.
  • Hand and Table Microtome — a simpler section cutter that clamps to the edge of a bench.
