What Is the Neuron Model Used For?
A neuron carries information as electrical impulses. Dendrites bring signals in to the cell body, which holds the nucleus and most of the organelles, and the axon carries impulses away towards other neurons, muscles or glands. It insulates the axon. Impulses jump from one node of Ranvier to the next, so they travel much faster along a myelinated fibre than along an unmyelinated one. Outside the brain and spinal cord, the sheath is formed by Schwann cells wrapped around the axon.
