Automotive AC Service Practicals

What does PAG 100 mean?
The number is the viscosity grade of the oil, and a higher number means a thicker oil. Vehicle and compressor makers name a grade for each compressor, so check the service data or the compressor label before filling.
Can PAG oil be used in a home split air conditioner?
No. Household split and window units are filled with POE or another oil named by the compressor maker. PAG is meant for automotive compressors, and the wrong oil can leave a compressor short of lubrication.
Does it suit R-1234yf systems?
PAG oils are used in both R-134a and R-1234yf car compressors, but makers often specify a particular PAG for R-1234yf. Use the type and grade on the under-bonnet label or in the service manual of the vehicle.
What about hybrid and electric cars?
Many electric compressors in hybrid and electric cars need a special oil with high electrical insulation. Ordinary PAG oil can lower that insulation, so follow the oil type the vehicle maker gives for these compressors.
