Is R-134a flammable?
It is classed A1: no flame spread in the standard test, and lower toxicity. It still breaks down into harmful gases in a flame or on a hot surface, so keep brazing torches away from charged lines and ventilate the room.
Can R-134a be charged as vapour?
Yes. It is a single compound, so vapour drawn from the upright cylinder has the same make-up as the liquid. Vapour charging into the suction side is the usual way to add refrigerant to a running system.
Can R-134a replace R-12 in an old system?
Only with a proper retrofit. R-134a needs a different compressor oil, usually POE or PAG in place of mineral oil. The system is flushed, fitted with a new filter drier and then recharged by weight.
Which gauges work with R-134a?
Any manifold with an R-134a scale. Stationary systems take flare-connected gauges, while vehicle work needs a mobile set with quick couplers that fit the service ports on the car.
