Two Friction Tests with the Pair
Pull one block across the bench at a steady speed with a spring balance on its hook; the reading is the sliding friction force F. Stack the second block on top and pull again: the normal force doubles and F roughly doubles, so F divided by the weight, the coefficient of friction, stays about the same. A square end face has half the area of a long face yet gives almost the same friction, which depends on the surfaces and the load, not the area.
