Reading the Scale Without Parallax
Set the cylinder on a flat, level surface and crouch until your eye is level with the water. Water curves into a meniscus, so read the graduation at the bottom of the curve; viewing from above or below shifts the reading. For the volume of a small solid, note the water level, slide the solid in gently on a thread, read the new level and subtract.
