Making and Breaking the Circuit
With the plug in place, current passes from one brass block to the other through the plug; with it out, the gap between the blocks leaves the circuit open. The taper lets the plug wedge firmly into the hole, and a slight twist as it goes in seats it for a low-resistance contact. Hold the plug by its moulded top. In an Ohm’s law or bridge experiment, put the key in series with the cell and insert the plug only while readings are taken, so the cell does not run down and the wires stay cool.
