Two Way Key (code EL-PL-12416) is a two-plug key that lets one connection be switched to either of two circuits. Its brass blocks carry 4 mm terminals and stand on a moulded plastic base, and two tapered brass plugs with fluted plastic tops close the gaps with very little contact resistance. Made by JLab in Ambala, India, it is a standard part of potentiometer practicals.

Switching Two Cells into a Potentiometer
To compare the EMFs of two cells, the common terminal of the key goes to the galvanometer and jockey, and each of the other terminals to one cell. Inserting the first plug brings the first cell into the circuit so its balance length can be found; removing it and inserting the second plug brings in the other cell without touching any wiring. Only one plug should be in at a time, otherwise the two cells are connected straight across each other.
Other Uses
The same key can switch a meter between two points in a circuit, or swap a galvanometer from a direct connection to one through a high series resistance while a bridge is being balanced. Keep the plugs and tapers clean, and seat each one with a slight twist for a firm contact.
