Redwood Viscometer (code EL-OAP-1705) is an electrically heated efflux viscometer that gives the viscosity of oils in Redwood seconds at the test temperature, as the IP 70 method calls for. Timing the Flow in Redwood Seconds
The levelling feet and spirit level set the instrument upright first. Oil is then poured into the silver-plated brass cup, which stands in the chromium-plated bath, and the bath is heated until the oil holds the test temperature. When the silver-plated ball valve is lifted, the oil runs out through the stainless steel jet into the 50 ml receiver, and the seconds taken to fill it are the reading. A thicker oil takes longer, so the time rises with viscosity.
Choosing Redwood Number 1 or Number 2
Redwood Number 1 is used for oils whose viscosity is not more than 2000 seconds at the test temperature. An oil that takes longer than 2000 seconds on the Number 1 is tested on the Redwood Number 2. Spare Number 1 and Number 2 cups and a spare receiving flask can be ordered, and the IP 8C, IP 9C and IP 10C thermometers are extras that cover 0 °C to 122 °C between them.
