What Are RIA Tubes Used For?
Radioimmunoassay measures very small amounts of hormones, drugs and other substances: the antigen in a sample competes with a radio-labelled antigen for a limited amount of antibody, and each standard, control and sample is run in its own tube. Should I choose polypropylene or polystyrene RIA tubes?
Choose polypropylene if the tubes will be spun above 1400 RCF or will hold common solvents: PP withstands 3000 RCF and accepts common acids, alkalis and solvents at room temperature. Polystyrene, rated to 1400 RCF, suits methods that use only mild bases and weak acids and no organic solvents.
What does the RCF rating mean?
RCF is relative centrifugal force, the force on the tube expressed as a multiple of gravity (x g). It depends on the rotor radius as well as the speed, so convert your centrifuge setting in rpm to RCF for your rotor and keep within the rating of the material you order.
How are these tubes different from the JLab Scintillation Vial?
The Scintillation Vial is a separate item: a high-density polyethylene vial with a leak-proof screw cap, made in 8 ml and 20 ml sizes for liquid scintillation counting equipment. Ria Vials are the 12 x 75 mm tube format in PP or PS.
