What Is a Scintillation Vial Used For?
In liquid scintillation counting the sample is dissolved or suspended in a scintillation cocktail inside the vial; radiation from the sample makes the cocktail give off tiny flashes of light, which the counter detects. Ordinary glass contains traces of naturally radioactive potassium, so a plastic vial adds less background of its own, and that matters most when the sample activity is low.
