How Does It Compare with Other JLab Microtomes?

ModelSection thickness (as listed)MechanismAccessories listed
This microtome (EL-RMET-2324)Up to 25 microns in 1-micron stepsInternal mechanism fully encased in a metal cover120 mm razor with back and handle, three object holders, honing plate, oil can
Rotary Senior Microtome1–50 microns in 1-micron stepsFeed mechanism under a hinged cover; safety device120 mm razor, three object holders, oil can
Digital Microtome1–50 microns in 1-micron stepsCam drive feed with digital scale; slides on ball bearings; heavy cast iron baseRazor, object holders, honing stone, dust cover and a disposable blade holder, among others

Choose the Erma-type microtome for routine teaching sections where a range up to 25 microns is enough and you want a honing plate in the box to keep the razor sharp. The Rotary Senior Microtome extends the range to 50 microns and lists a safety device, while the Digital Microtome adds a digital scale, ball-bearing slides and a disposable blade holder.

What Is a Rotary Microtome Used For?

A microtome cuts tissue into slices thin enough for light to pass through under a microscope. On a rotary microtome, each turn of the handwheel moves the specimen block past the fixed razor and advances it by the thickness you have set, so a paraffin-embedded block gives a continuous ribbon of serial sections. The ribbon is floated on warm water to flatten it, picked up on glass slides, dried and stained. This makes the instrument a staple of histology and histopathology teaching in medical, veterinary and paramedical (DMLT and BMLT) colleges, and of plant and animal slide-making in botany and zoology departments.

Good sections depend on a sharp edge and a smooth feed. Use the honing plate to restore the razor edge, oil the moving parts with the oil can as part of routine care, and keep the metal cover in place so wax shavings stay out of the mechanism. Handle the razor by its back and handle, and keep fingers clear of the edge when changing blocks.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 microtomes.
  • Spare razors and object holders — available as separate catalogue items for replacements and extra blocks.
  • Section preparation equipment — add a tissue flotation bath or paraffin dispenser to the same enquiry for a complete histology bench.

Frequently Asked Questions

What section thickness can this microtome cut?
Uniform sections up to 25 microns, with the thickness set in steps of 1 micron.

Which accessories come with it?
A 120 mm razor with back and handle, a set of three object holders, a honing plate and an oil can. The microtome is packed in a cardboard box with thermocol packing.

What does “Erma type” mean?
It describes the design pattern of the microtome. The instrument is made by JLab in Ambala to that pattern; the name does not imply any connection with the Erma company.

How does it differ from the Rotary Senior Microtome?
This model is listed for sections up to 25 microns, with a fully enclosed mechanism and a honing plate among its accessories. The Rotary Senior Microtome is listed for 1–50 microns, has its feed mechanism under a hinged cover and a safety device, and comes with a razor, three object holders and an oil can.

Can I buy spare razors and object holders?
Yes. JLab lists a microtome razor and a set of three microtome object holders as separate items; give this product code when ordering so the fit can be confirmed.

Who manufactures this microtome?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) builds it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.
