Rubber Pad (code EL-PL-12386) is a plain, square pad of black rubber, model JL296/046. In sound practicals a pad like this is what a tuning fork is struck on, because rubber sets the prongs vibrating without the clang of overtones that a hard bench gives. It is one of the small physics accessories JLab makes in Ambala, India.

Striking a Fork Properly
Hold the fork by its stem and bring one prong down briskly on the pad, then lift it clear at once so the prongs vibrate freely. Rubber brings out the fundamental note of the fork with few overtones. Striking on wood, metal or glass adds high overtones for the first moments and in time can dent or nick a prong, which alters its frequency.
Forks to Use With the Pad
- Tuning Fork Set — eight chrome-plated steel forks in a pouch, one octave apart at the ends.
- Tuning Fork — set of eight aluminium-alloy forks in a wooden box.
- Sonometer — wooden resonance box tuned against a struck fork.
Other sound apparatus is in the Physics Lab range.
