Identifying Spirogyra Under the Microscope
Cylindrical cells are joined end to end in a long filament. Each cell has one or more ribbon-shaped chloroplasts coiled around the inside of the wall, studded with pyrenoids where starch is made and stored. The nucleus hangs in the middle of a large vacuole on fine strands of cytoplasm, and a mucilage coat makes the filaments slimy. In conjugation, tubes form between cells of neighbouring filaments in a ladder-like pattern, and the contents of one cell pass across to fuse with the other.
