What Is the Spirogyra Chart Used For?

Spirogyra grows as bright green, slimy threads in ponds and slow streams, which is why it is sometimes called water silk. Each unbranched filament is a row of cylindrical cells, and every cell holds one or more ribbon-shaped chloroplasts coiled in a spiral, with a central nucleus held in strands of cytoplasm. In class 10 it is the textbook example of reproduction by fragmentation, where a filament simply breaks into pieces that grow on; in class 11 it represents the green algae (Chlorophyceae) and their sexual reproduction by conjugation, in which the contents of one cell pass into another to form a thick-walled zygospore. Spirogyra is also a regular slide in plant biology practicals.

Use the chart beside the microscope while students examine a Spirogyra slide or a fresh pond sample, so that they can match the spiral chloroplasts and conjugation stages they see with the printed diagrams. The laminated surface wipes clean, and the chart rolls up on its plastic rollers for storage. The listing does not describe the artwork panel by panel, so ask JLab for a larger photograph if you need to check it against your practical syllabus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Spirogyra Chart used for?
It is used to teach the structure and reproduction of Spirogyra, the filamentous green alga in class 10 and class 11 biology and college botany. The listing does not describe the artwork in detail, so check the photograph on this page or ask JLab for a larger image.

How big is the chart?
58 x 90 cm, or about 22.8 x 35.4 inches. It is printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both faces with thick plastic film and has plastic rollers for hanging.

Why is it called Spirogyra?
The name refers to the spiral, ribbon-shaped chloroplasts that coil along the inside of each cell. They are the easiest feature for students to recognise under the microscope.

What is conjugation in Spirogyra?
It is the sexual process of the alga. In scalariform conjugation two filaments lie side by side and form tubes between their cells, giving a ladder-like look; the contents of one cell move into the other and fuse to form a zygospore, which can survive unfavourable conditions.

What is the minimum order and lead time?
The minimum order is 10 units, each chart sold individually and visually inspected. Dispatch is usually within 7–10 working days; transit for export orders is extra.
