What Is the Double Fertilization Chart Used For?
After pollination, the pollen grain on the stigma grows a pollen tube down through the style to the ovule, usually entering through the micropyle, and releases two male gametes into the embryo sac. A typical embryo sac has the egg apparatus (the egg cell and two synergids) at the micropylar end, three antipodal cells at the opposite end and a large central cell with two polar nuclei. One male gamete fuses with the egg cell (syngamy) to form the diploid zygote, which grows into the embryo; the other fuses with the two polar nuclei (triple fusion) to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus, which develops into the endosperm that nourishes the embryo. Because two fusions take place in the same embryo sac, the process is called double fertilization; it is characteristic of flowering plants.
Double fertilization is a core topic of the class 12 biology chapter on sexual reproduction in flowering plants and of college botany, and many students follow it more easily on a large wall diagram than in a small textbook figure. Teachers can walk through the terms in order — pollen tube, synergid, syngamy, triple fusion, zygote, endosperm — and leave the chart up for revision. The laminated surface wipes clean and the chart rolls up on its rollers.
What to Specify When Ordering

Frequently Asked Questions
What is double fertilization?
The two fusions that take place in the embryo sac of a flowering plant: one male gamete fuses with the egg to form the zygote, and the other fuses with the two polar nuclei to form the primary endosperm nucleus.
What is triple fusion?
The fusion of the second male gamete with the two polar nuclei of the central cell. Three haploid nuclei are involved, so the product, the primary endosperm nucleus, is triploid.
What happens to the zygote and the endosperm afterwards?
The zygote divides to form the embryo, and the endosperm grows as a food tissue for it; the ovule then matures into the seed and the ovary into the fruit.
