What Is the Dicot Root T.S. Chart Used For?
In transverse section a dicot root shows an epiblema with unicellular root hairs, a cortex of thin-walled parenchyma, an endodermis with Casparian strips, and a pericycle from which lateral roots arise. The xylem and phloem form separate, alternating patches — usually two to four of each — joined by parenchyma called conjunctive tissue, and the pith is small or hardly visible. Later a vascular cambium develops from the conjunctive tissue and the pericycle, so dicot roots can thicken by secondary growth. Class 11 biology compares these features with the monocot root, and students look for them in stained sections during practicals.
Students can use the chart to label their own drawings of a root section before a practical test. Wipe the laminated surface with a damp cloth to keep it clean, and roll the chart up on its rollers when it is not on display.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do lateral roots come from in a dicot root?
From the pericycle, the layer just inside the endodermis. Because they start deep inside the root and grow out through the cortex, lateral roots are described as endogenous.
How many xylem and phloem patches does a dicot root have?
Usually two to four of each, arranged alternately on different radii. A monocot root normally has more than six xylem patches, so counting them is a quick way to identify the section.
Can a dicot root grow thicker?
Yes. A vascular cambium forms from the conjunctive tissue and part of the pericycle and produces secondary xylem and phloem, so dicot roots thicken much as dicot stems do. Monocot roots do not.
What size and finish does this chart have?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers for hanging.
What are the order minimum and lead time?
Orders start at 10 units. Each chart is visually inspected, and dispatch is usually within 7–10 working days; for overseas buyers, shipping time depends on the destination and method.
