What Is the Monocot Root T.S. Chart Used For?
A monocot root in transverse section has an outer epiblema bearing root hairs, a wide cortex of parenchyma, and an endodermis whose cells carry Casparian strips, which control how water and minerals pass into the vascular tissue. Inside the pericycle, xylem and phloem lie in separate patches on alternate radii (radial bundles); a monocot root usually has more than six xylem patches, described as polyarch, and a large, well-developed pith. Monocot roots do not undergo secondary growth. The section belongs to the class 11 chapter on the anatomy of flowering plants and to the matching practical, in which students cut and stain root sections themselves.
Hang it beside the dicot root chart so that students can count the xylem patches and compare the size of the pith. The laminated surface wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the rollers make the chart easy to store rolled.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many xylem bundles does a monocot root have?
Usually more than six, an arrangement called polyarch. A typical dicot root has only two to four xylem patches, which is one of the quickest ways to tell the two sections apart.
What is the role of the Casparian strip?
The radial and end walls of endodermal cells carry a band of waterproof suberin, the Casparian strip. Water and dissolved minerals cannot pass along the cell walls at that point and must go through the living cells, so the plant controls what enters the xylem.
How does a monocot root differ from a dicot root?
A monocot root has more xylem patches (polyarch), a large pith and no secondary growth. A dicot root has two to four patches, little or no pith, and later forms a cambium that lets it thicken.
What are the dimensions and finish?
58 x 90 cm, roughly 22.8 x 35.4 inches, printed in full colour on art paper and laminated on both sides with thick plastic film; plastic rollers are fitted.
