What Is the Monocot Stem T.S. Chart Used For?
In a transverse section of a monocot stem, the epidermis is followed by a hypodermis of sclerenchyma and then by a large mass of parenchymatous ground tissue in which many vascular bundles lie scattered; there is no clear division into cortex, endodermis and pith. Each bundle is conjoint and closed — it has no cambium — is surrounded by a sclerenchymatous bundle sheath, and often shows a water-containing cavity near the protoxylem. Without cambium, most monocot stems do not thicken by secondary growth. Cutting and studying sections of monocot and dicot stems is part of class 11 practical work, and the chart gives students a labelled reference to compare with what they see under the microscope.
Hang it next to a dicot stem chart so that the differences can be pointed out side by side. The laminated surface can be wiped with a damp cloth, and the plastic rollers let the chart be rolled up after the practical.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a monocot stem different from a dicot stem in transverse section?
In a monocot stem the vascular bundles are scattered through the ground tissue, are closed (no cambium) and have sclerenchymatous sheaths, and there is no distinct cortex or pith. A dicot stem has its bundles in a ring, each open with cambium, around a central pith, with a collenchymatous hypodermis and a clear cortex and endodermis.
Which plant does the chart use?
The listing does not name the specimen; the product photograph on this page shows the artwork. Maize is the standard textbook example of a monocot stem section, and grasses such as wheat give similar sections.
Why do most monocot stems not grow thicker like tree trunks?
Their vascular bundles are closed, so there is no vascular cambium to make secondary xylem and phloem. A few monocots, such as Dracaena, thicken by an unusual (anomalous) kind of secondary growth.
What are the chart’s size and finish?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film, with plastic rollers fitted for hanging.
