What Is the Calyx and Corolla Chart Used For?
The calyx is the outermost whorl of a flower, made of sepals that are usually green and protect the bud before it opens. Inside it lies the corolla, the whorl of petals, which is often brightly coloured and helps attract insects and other pollinators. Young students learn these parts in the class 6 lesson on the parts of a flower. In the class 11 chapter on the morphology of flowering plants the terms go further: sepals and petals may be free (polysepalous, polypetalous) or joined (gamosepalous, gamopetalous), and their arrangement in the bud — aestivation — is described as valvate, twisted, imbricate or vexillary, as in the pea flower. Where sepals and petals look alike, as in the lily, they are called tepals. These terms are needed for writing floral formulae and floral diagrams in practical work.
Hang the chart in the biology room during flower dissection practicals so that students can compare real flowers, such as hibiscus or a pea flower, with the printed examples and terms. The laminated face wipes clean and the chart rolls up on its rollers for storage. The listing does not describe the artwork in detail; ask JLab for a larger image to check which examples it shows.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Calyx and Corolla Chart cover?
It is a teaching chart on the sepals (calyx) and petals (corolla) of flowers for school and college botany. The listing does not describe the artwork; see the photograph on this page or ask JLab for a larger image.
What size is it?
58 x 90 cm, which is about 22.8 x 35.4 inches. It is printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers.
What is the difference between the calyx and the corolla?
The calyx is the outer whorl of sepals, usually green and protective; the corolla is the inner whorl of petals, usually coloured and attractive to pollinators. Together they form the perianth around the stamens and carpels.
What is aestivation?
Aestivation is the way sepals or petals are arranged in the flower bud relative to one another. The main types are valvate (edges just touching), twisted (each overlapping the next in one direction), imbricate (irregular overlapping) and vexillary (the pea-flower pattern).
