What Is the Photosynthesis Chart Used For?

Photosynthesis takes place mainly in the leaves, inside chloroplasts, where the green pigment chlorophyll absorbs light. Carbon dioxide enters through the stomata and water comes up from the roots through the xylem; using the light energy, the plant turns them into glucose and gives off oxygen as a by-product. The process has two linked stages: the light reactions on the thylakoid membranes split water, release oxygen and make ATP and NADPH, and the Calvin cycle in the stroma uses these to build sugar from carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis is taught in class 10 science under life processes and has its own chapter, photosynthesis in higher plants, in class 11 biology.

The chart backs up the familiar school experiments: testing a leaf for starch with iodine after the plant has been kept in the dark and then in light, using a variegated leaf to show that chlorophyll is needed, covering part of a leaf to show that light is needed, and collecting the oxygen given off by a water plant such as Hydrilla. Keep it beside the bench during these practicals, wipe the laminated face clean after use and roll it for storage.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — minimum 10 units; the photosynthesis apparatus or kit can go on the same enquiry.
  • Language — English only as listed; ask before ordering if you need another language.
  • Artwork — ask for a photo of the current print to see which diagrams and labels it carries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the raw materials and products of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide and water are the raw materials; with light energy absorbed by chlorophyll, the plant makes glucose and releases oxygen.

Where in the cell does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts. The light reactions run on the thylakoid membranes, and the sugar-building Calvin cycle runs in the surrounding stroma.

Does the listing say exactly what the chart shows?
No. It gives the size, printing, finish and language only, so ask JLab for a photo of the current print to check the diagrams and labels against your syllabus.

Who supplies the Photosynthesis Chart?
