What Is the Plant Cell Mitosis Chart Used For?
Mitosis follows interphase, when the DNA is copied. In prophase the chromosomes condense and become visible; in metaphase they line up at the equator of the spindle; in anaphase the sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles; and in telophase new nuclear envelopes form around each group. Plant cells, with their rigid wall and no centrioles, then divide the cytoplasm by a cell plate that grows from the centre of the cell outwards. Mitosis drives growth at root and shoot tips, which is why the class 11 practical asks students to identify the stages in onion root tip cells on permanent slides.
Put the chart up before the slide practical and ask students to find one cell at each stage and match it to the drawing. Clean the laminated surface with a damp cloth and roll the chart up on its rollers afterwards.
What to Specify When Ordering

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the onion root tip used to study mitosis?
The root tip is a meristem where cells divide all the time, so many cells are caught at different stages, and onion chromosomes are relatively large and few, which makes them easy to see. Onion roots are also simple to grow from a bulb in water.
How does mitosis in plant cells differ from mitosis in animal cells?
Plant cells have no centrioles, so the spindle forms without asters, and because of the rigid cell wall the cytoplasm is divided by a cell plate laid down from the centre outwards. Animal cells have centrioles and divide the cytoplasm by a furrow that pinches the cell in two.
Should I order the meiosis chart as well?
If your course covers both divisions, yes — the Plant Cell Meiosis Chart is a separate 58 x 90 cm title in the same finish, and having both on the wall makes the differences between the divisions easy to explain.
How large is the chart and how is it finished?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), printed in full colour on art paper and laminated on both sides with thick plastic film, with plastic rollers for hanging.
What are the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum is 10 units. Every chart is inspected visually, and orders are usually dispatched within 7–10 working days, plus transit time for export destinations.
