What Is the Fern Life Cycle Chart Used For?
Ferns are pteridophytes, the first land plants with true vascular tissue. The leafy fern that students recognise is the diploid sporophyte, with roots, an underground stem (rhizome) and fronds. Clusters of sporangia, called sori, form on the underside of the fronds, and meiosis inside them produces haploid spores. A spore that lands in a damp place grows into a small, flat, often heart-shaped prothallus — the gametophyte — which carries the male and female sex organs. Sperm need a film of water to swim to the egg, and the zygote grows into a new fern plant. This alternation of generations is part of the class 11 chapter on the plant kingdom and of first-year college botany.
Teachers often show the chart next to a real frond with sori, or a preserved fern specimen, so that students can find the structures themselves. The laminated chart can be wiped clean and rolled up on its rollers after the lesson. Because the listing does not describe the artwork stage by stage, ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check the labels.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Life Cycle of Fern Chart show?
It is a teaching chart on the fern life cycle — the sporophyte, spores and the gametophyte stage — for school and college botany. The listing does not describe the artwork in detail; the photograph on this page shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image.
What are the size and finish?
It is 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers for hanging.
Why do ferns need water to reproduce?
The male gametes of a fern are swimming sperm. They reach the egg on the prothallus only through a thin film of water, which is why ferns are found mostly in damp, shady places.
How is the fern life cycle different from the moss life cycle?
In a fern the large, long-lived plant is the sporophyte and the gametophyte is a small prothallus; in a moss the green plant is the gametophyte and the sporophyte grows on it. The Life Cycle of Moss Chart in the same series covers the moss.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum order is 10 units, sold individually. Charts are visually inspected and usually dispatched within 7–10 working days; export transit is extra and depends on the destination.
