What Is the Regions of Root Chart Used For?
Every growing root tip shows the same sequence of regions. At the very end is the root cap, a thimble-like cover that protects the delicate tip as it pushes through the soil. Just behind it lies the region of meristematic activity, where small, thin-walled cells with dense cytoplasm divide again and again. Next comes the region of elongation, where the new cells lengthen rapidly and push the tip forward, so the root grows in length. Further back is the region of maturation, where cells differentiate into the root’s tissues and many fine root hairs grow out to absorb water and minerals from the soil. These regions are described in the class 11 chapter on the morphology of flowering plants, and the role of root hairs is introduced earlier, in middle-school science.
Germinating seeds of gram, mustard or maize on moist blotting paper give students real root tips with visible root hairs to compare with the chart; a stained root tip squash under the microscope shows the dividing cells. The laminated chart wipes clean and rolls onto its rollers for storage. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check its labelling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Regions of Root Chart teach?
It teaches the zones of a root tip — root cap, meristematic region, region of elongation and region of maturation — for class 11 biology and college botany. The listing does not detail the artwork; see the photograph on this page or ask JLab for a larger image.
What are the size and finish?
58 x 90 cm, about 22.8 x 35.4 inches. The chart is printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers.
Which region of the root is responsible for growth in length?
Mainly the region of elongation. Cells produced in the meristematic region just behind the root cap expand rapidly in length there, pushing the root tip deeper into the soil.
Where are root hairs found and what do they do?
In the region of maturation, behind the zone of elongation. Each root hair is a long outgrowth of a single surface cell, and together they greatly increase the area for absorbing water and minerals.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
At least 10 units, each sold individually and visually inspected. Dispatch is usually within 7–10 working days; transit for export orders is extra.
