What Is the Seed Dispersal Chart Used For?

Seeds that drop straight under the parent plant would compete with it, and with one another, for light, water and nutrients, so fruits and seeds carry features that move them away. Wind-dispersed seeds are small and light, or have wings, as in drumstick and maple, or tufts of hairs, as in madar (Calotropis) and cotton. Water-dispersed fruits float: the coconut has a fibrous husk, and the lotus fruit sits in a spongy thalamus. Animals spread seeds by eating fleshy fruits and passing the seeds, or by carrying hooked and spiny fruits such as Xanthium on their fur. Some fruits scatter their own seeds by bursting open, as in balsam and castor.

Students can collect local fruits and seeds, sort them by how they are dispersed and then check their groups against the chart; a dandelion head, a coconut husk or a burr makes the idea easy to see. Seed dispersal is part of school science on plant reproduction. Keep the chart rolled on its rollers when it is not displayed and clean the laminated surface with a slightly damp cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main ways fruits and seeds are dispersed?
By wind, by water, by animals (people included) and by the plant itself, when a fruit bursts open and throws its seeds out.

Why do plants need to disperse their seeds?
To reduce crowding and competition with the parent plant and between seedlings, and to let the species reach new places to grow.

Which examples does the chart show?
The listing does not name them; ask JLab for a photo of the current print to see the examples and labels before you order.
