What Is the Moss Life Cycle Chart Used For?
Mosses are bryophytes, often called the amphibians of the plant kingdom because they live on land but need water for fertilisation. In a moss such as Funaria the green, leafy plant is the haploid gametophyte. A spore first grows into a thread-like protonema, from which buds develop into upright leafy shoots anchored by rhizoids. The male and female sex organs (antheridia and archegonia) form at the tips of these shoots, and sperm swim through a film of water to reach the egg. The zygote grows into the sporophyte — a foot, a stalk called the seta, and a capsule — which stays attached to the gametophyte and depends on it. Meiosis in the capsule produces spores that are scattered to begin the cycle again. This is part of the class 11 chapter on the plant kingdom and of college bryophyte studies.
Living moss from a damp wall or tree trunk, examined with a hand lens, makes the chart much easier to follow; capsules on their stalks are often visible after rain. The laminated surface can be wiped clean, and the chart rolls up on its rollers for storage. The listing does not describe the artwork stage by stage, so ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check the labelling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Life Cycle of Moss Chart cover?
It covers the life cycle of a moss, from spore and protonema to the leafy gametophyte and the capsule-bearing sporophyte, for class 11 biology and college botany. The listing does not detail the artwork; see the photograph on this page or ask JLab for a larger image.
What are its size and finish?
58 x 90 cm, which is about 22.8 x 35.4 inches; printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film, with plastic rollers for hanging.
Which generation is dominant in a moss?
The gametophyte. The green leafy moss plant is the haploid gametophyte, and the sporophyte — foot, seta and capsule — grows on it and depends on it for water and much of its food. In ferns the opposite is true.
What is the protonema?
It is the first stage that grows from a moss spore: a green, branched, thread-like structure that spreads over the ground. Buds on the protonema develop into the leafy shoots of the moss.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
Ten units is the minimum order; each chart is sold individually and visually inspected before packing. Dispatch normally takes 7–10 working days, plus transit time for export orders.
