What Is the Animal Cell Mitosis Chart Used For?

Mitosis is how a body grows, repairs wounds and replaces worn-out cells. In the class 11 chapter on the cell cycle and cell division, students follow the sequence step by step. During interphase the DNA is copied. In prophase the chromatin condenses into chromosomes, each made of two sister chromatids, the centrioles move apart to opposite poles and the nuclear envelope and nucleolus disappear. In metaphase the chromosomes line up at the equator, held by spindle fibres at their kinetochores; in anaphase the sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite poles; and in telophase new nuclear envelopes form around each group. Cytokinesis then divides the cytoplasm — in an animal cell by a furrow that pinches the cell in two.

Because the stages run into one another, students often find a fixed sequence on the wall easier to follow than a moving microscope field. Teachers use the chart to introduce the stages before a slide practical, to compare animal and plant mitosis, and for revision before exams. Hang it by its rollers; the laminated surface can be wiped clean. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check which stages and labels appear.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — minimum 10 units, supplied as individual charts.
  • Companion chart — the animal cell meiosis chart covers the other kind of division and is often ordered together.
  • Models and slides — a mitosis model or a set of prepared mitosis slides can be added for practical work.
  • Delivery — city and country, with port and delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF) for export.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Animal Cell Mitosis Chart show students?
It covers how an animal cell divides by mitosis to give two daughter cells. The listing does not describe the artwork; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image on request.

How large is the chart and how is it finished?
It is 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 inches), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers.

How does mitosis in an animal cell differ from mitosis in a plant cell?
Animal cells have centrioles that help organise the spindle, and they divide their cytoplasm by a furrow that pinches inwards. Plant cells have no centrioles and build a cell plate across the middle, because their rigid wall cannot pinch in.

What is the result of mitosis?
Two daughter cells, each with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent cell. That is why mitosis is called an equational division.
