What Is the Animal Cell Meiosis Chart Used For?
Meiosis halves the chromosome number, so that when a sperm and an egg fuse at fertilisation the offspring has the same number of chromosomes as its parents. In the class 11 chapter on cell division, students learn that one round of DNA copying is followed by two divisions. Meiosis I is the reduction division: its long prophase is split into leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis, during which homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange segments by crossing over, and in anaphase I the homologous chromosomes, not the chromatids, move to opposite poles. Meiosis II then separates the sister chromatids much as mitosis does, leaving four haploid cells, each genetically different.
The stages of prophase I and the difference between the two divisions are where students most often go wrong, so a large reference chart helps during lessons, practicals and revision. It links forward to the class 12 chapters on human reproduction and inheritance, where meiosis explains gamete formation and genetic variation. Hang it alongside a mitosis chart to compare the two kinds of division. The laminated face can be wiped clean. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image if you want to check the stages and labels before ordering.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Order size — no fewer than 10 units; each chart comes individually.
- Mitosis and gametogenesis charts — useful companions for teaching cell division and gamete formation as one unit.
- Three-dimensional models or prepared meiosis slides, if your practical classes need them.
- Destination — city and country; for export, also the port and delivery terms such as FOB or CIF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which topic does this chart cover?
It covers meiosis in animal cells — how a diploid cell divides twice to form haploid cells. The artwork is not described in the listing; the photograph on this page shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image.
What is the chart's size and finish?
The chart is 58 x 90 cm, about 22.8 x 35.4 inches, in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers.
How is meiosis different from mitosis?
Mitosis is one division that gives two cells identical to the parent. Meiosis is two divisions after a single round of DNA copying, giving four cells with half the chromosome number, and crossing over during prophase I makes each of them genetically different.
Why is meiosis important?
It keeps the chromosome number constant from one generation to the next and, through crossing over and the random sorting of chromosomes, produces the variation on which evolution acts.
How many charts must I order, and how soon are they sent?
The minimum is 10 units, sold as single charts. Dispatch is usually within 7–10 working days after each chart has been visually checked; export transit time depends on where the order is going.
