What Is the Amoeba Chart Used For?

Amoeba is the textbook example of a whole organism living as one cell. Found in fresh water, it has no fixed shape: it pushes out finger-like pseudopodia to move and to surround its food, which is enclosed in a food vacuole where it is digested and absorbed, while undigested remains are thrown out of the cell. A contractile vacuole collects excess water and expels it, and the nucleus controls the cell. These features appear in the class 10 chapter on life processes, where nutrition in Amoeba is the standard example of holozoic feeding, and in the chapter on reproduction, where Amoeba divides by binary fission — the nucleus splits first and the cytoplasm follows, giving two daughter cells.

Students rarely get a clear view of a living Amoeba under a school microscope, so an enlarged chart lets the class see the structures they are reading about and copy a well-labelled diagram. It also introduces the parasitic relative Entamoeba histolytica, the cause of amoebic dysentery, in health lessons. Hang the chart from its rollers and wipe the laminated surface clean when needed. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check the stages and labels.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — at least 10 units; charts are supplied individually.
  • Microscope work — prepared Amoeba slides or an Amoeba model can be quoted together with the chart.
  • Protozoa set — the protozoa and Paramoecium charts from the same series complete the topic.
  • Delivery — city and country, plus port and delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF) for export.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can students learn from the Amoeba Chart?
They can learn the structure of Amoeba and how this single cell moves, feeds and reproduces. The listing does not describe the artwork; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image.

What are the chart's dimensions and finish?
It is 58 x 90 cm, about 22.8 x 35.4 inches, printed in full colour on art paper, laminated both sides with thick plastic film and hung from plastic rollers.

How does Amoeba take in food?
It flows around a food particle with its pseudopodia and encloses it in a food vacuole. Enzymes digest the food inside the vacuole, the products pass into the cytoplasm, and the undigested part is pushed out at the cell surface.

What does the contractile vacuole do?
Water keeps entering a freshwater Amoeba by osmosis. The contractile vacuole gathers this extra water and squeezes it out of the cell, so the Amoeba does not swell and burst.
