What Is the Paramoecium Chart Used For?

Paramoecium is the standard example of a ciliated protozoan. Its whole surface is covered with rows of fine cilia that beat together to drive it through the water, and a firm outer pellicle gives it a fixed slipper shape — unlike Amoeba, which keeps changing form. The class 10 chapter on life processes uses it to show that a single cell can take in food at one particular spot: the beating cilia sweep water carrying food into an oral groove and gullet, where food vacuoles form. In class 11, under Kingdom Protista, students add further features — contractile vacuoles that pump out excess water, a large macronucleus and a small micronucleus, defensive trichocysts, transverse binary fission and the sexual process called conjugation.

Paramoecium is easy to culture from hay infusion or pond water, so it is often the first protozoan students actually watch under the microscope. The chart lets the class match what they see — a fast-moving, slipper-shaped cell — with labelled structures, and compare it with Amoeba and other protists. Keep it rolled on its rollers when not in use; the laminated surface wipes clean. The artwork is not described in the listing, so ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check the labels.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — 10 units at minimum, each packed as a separate chart.
  • Slides — prepared Paramecium slides for the microscope practical can be added to the enquiry.
  • Other protozoa titles — the Amoeba and protozoa charts from the same series.
  • Delivery — destination city and country; for export, the port and terms such as FOB or CIF.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topic does the Paramoecium Chart support?
It supports lessons on the structure and life of Paramoecium, a ciliated single-celled organism. The listing does not describe the artwork; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image before you order.

What size is the chart and how is it made?
The chart measures 58 x 90 cm, about 22.8 x 35.4 inches. It is printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers.

Is it Paramoecium or Paramecium?
Both spellings refer to the same organism. Indian textbooks generally write Paramoecium, while Paramecium is common in international references.

Why does Paramoecium have two kinds of nucleus?
The large macronucleus controls everyday activities such as feeding and growth, while the small micronucleus is involved in reproduction, including the exchange of genetic material during conjugation.

Who supplies the chart?
