What Is the Earthworm External Morphology Chart Used For?
The earthworm is the class 11 type animal for the phylum Annelida. Its long, cylindrical body is divided into many ring-like segments (metameres); a dark mid-line on the back is the dorsal blood vessel seen through the skin, and the underside carries the genital openings. The first segment, the peristomium, holds the mouth, overhung by a lobe called the prostomium that wedges into cracks in the soil. In a mature worm a thick glandular band, the clitellum, encircles a few segments near the front. Tiny S-shaped bristles called setae, set in every segment except the first, the last and the clitellum, grip the soil while the circular and longitudinal muscles contract in turn.
Earthworms are hermaphrodite — each worm has both testes and ovaries — yet they cross-fertilise. During mating two worms exchange sperm, which each stores in sacs called spermathecae. Later the clitellum secretes a cocoon into which eggs and the stored sperm are released; fertilisation and development take place inside the cocoon, and the young hatch as tiny worms, with no larval stage. Use the chart with live worms on damp soil and a hand lens to find the setae and clitellum. The laminated surface wipes clean. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image to check which structures are labelled.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Earthworm - I chart cover?
As its title says, the external morphology and reproduction of the earthworm. The listing does not describe the panels in detail; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image before you order.
What size and finish is it?
It is 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 inches), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers. The text is in English only.
What is the clitellum?
A thick band of glandular tissue around a few segments near the front of a mature earthworm. It secretes the cocoon in which the eggs are fertilised and develop.
If earthworms are hermaphrodite, why do two worms mate?
To cross-fertilise. Each worm passes sperm to its partner, which stores it and later uses it to fertilise its own eggs inside the cocoon, so the offspring carry genes from two parents.
How do the three earthworm charts differ?
By topic. Chart I covers external morphology and reproduction, chart II blood circulation, respiration and the nervous system, and chart III digestion, skin and excretion. Size, print and fittings are the same.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
Ten units, sold individually. Charts usually ship within 7–10 working days after each one is checked visually; export orders add transit time.
