What Is the Earthworm Circulation and Nervous System Chart Used For?
The earthworm has a closed blood vascular system: blood stays inside vessels, capillaries and hearts instead of flowing freely through the body cavity. A dorsal vessel above the gut carries blood forwards, a ventral vessel below it carries blood backwards, and several pairs of muscular hearts in the front segments link the two. The blood is red because haemoglobin is dissolved in the plasma rather than held in red cells, and its blood cells are phagocytic. There are no lungs or gills: oxygen dissolves in the film of moisture on the skin and passes into the blood in capillaries just beneath it, which is why an earthworm must keep its skin moist and soon dies if it dries out.
The nervous system is built on a ventral nerve cord running the length of the body, with a ganglion in each segment. Near the front, the cord divides and passes round the pharynx to join the cerebral ganglia above it, forming a nerve ring that integrates what the senses report and commands the muscles. Earthworms have no eyes, but receptor cells in the skin respond to light and touch, and chemoreceptors work as taste receptors. Teach this chart after Earthworm - I so students see how a segmented body is supplied segment by segment; a simple test of a live worm’s response to light and touch works well alongside it. The laminated surface wipes clean. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image to check which structures are labelled.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — at least 10 units; each chart is supplied on its own.
- Rest of the set — Earthworm - I (external morphology and reproduction) and Earthworm - III (digestion, skin and excretion) complete the type study.
- Alternative format — the polyart Earthworm chart if you prefer a single larger sheet.
- Live-worm activity — hand lenses and G.I. sheet dissecting trays can be added to the enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Earthworm - II chart cover?
As its title says, the earthworm’s blood circulation, respiration and nervous system. The listing does not describe the panels in detail; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image before you order.
What are the chart’s size and finish?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 inches), full-colour print on art paper, thick plastic-film lamination on both sides and plastic rollers. All text is in English.
Is the earthworm’s circulatory system open or closed?
Closed. The blood is always inside the hearts, vessels and capillaries, and the pumping keeps it moving in one direction.
How does an earthworm breathe without lungs?
Through its skin. Oxygen dissolves in the moist body surface and diffuses into the blood in the capillaries below, while carbon dioxide leaves the same way.
Why is earthworm blood red?
It contains haemoglobin, but dissolved in the plasma rather than packed into red blood cells as in humans.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
Ten units, sold individually. Orders usually ship within 7–10 working days after a visual check of every chart; add transit time for exports.
