What Is the Chick Development Chart Used For?
Birds are oviparous. In the hen, fertilisation takes place inside the body, and the zygote keeps dividing as it travels down the oviduct, where protective layers, including the hard shell, form around it; by the time the egg is laid, development has already begun. Inside the egg the embryo lies on the yolk, its food store, surrounded by the albumen (egg white), which supplies water and protein; twisted strands called chalazae hold the yolk in place, and an air space forms at the broad end. Membranes grow out from the embryo: the yolk sac absorbs food, the amnion encloses it in fluid, and the allantois stores wastes and, together with the chorion, exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide through tiny pores in the shell.
With steady warmth from the brooding hen or an incubator, a hen’s egg takes about three weeks to hatch. Near the end, the chick breaks into the air space and begins breathing air, then chips through the shell with the small, hard egg tooth on the tip of its beak and pushes its way out, emerging wet and drying into a fluffy chick within hours. The chart suits the class 8 chapter on reproduction in animals (oviparous animals and internal fertilisation) and college courses on vertebrate development, and it contrasts well with the frog’s development in water. The laminated surface wipes clean. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image to see which stages are drawn.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — minimum 10 units; each chart is supplied separately.
- Companion charts — the Food Habits of Birds Chart and the Life History of Frog Chart from the same series pair well with it.
- Incubation work — the laboratory Egg Incubator is a separate item if your school or college plans to hatch eggs.
- Delivery — city and country, plus port and delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF) for export.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Birth of a Bird's Chick Chart cover?
How a chick develops inside the egg and hatches. The listing does not list the stages drawn; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image before you order.
What are its size and finish?
It is 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 inches), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers. The text is in English only.
How long does a hen’s egg take to hatch?
About three weeks of incubation at a steady warm temperature, whether under the hen or in an incubator.
Where does the chick get its food inside the egg?
From the yolk, absorbed through the yolk sac, and from the albumen. Everything it needs until hatching is already sealed inside the shell.
How does the chick breathe before it hatches?
Oxygen passes in, and carbon dioxide out, through pores in the shell, and blood vessels in the chorion and allantois carry the gases. Shortly before hatching the chick starts breathing air from the air space.
Is fertilisation in birds internal or external?
Internal. The egg is fertilised inside the hen before the shell forms, which is why only eggs from a hen kept with a cock can develop into chicks.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
Ten units, sold individually. Charts usually go out within 7–10 working days after a visual check; export orders need transit time in addition.
