What Is the Body Defense Chart Used For?
Immunity is the body’s ability to fight disease-causing organisms, and class 12 biology divides it into two kinds. Innate immunity is present from birth and is non-specific: physical barriers such as the skin and the mucus lining of the airways and gut; physiological barriers such as stomach acid, saliva and tears; cellular barriers — neutrophils, monocytes, natural killer cells and tissue macrophages that engulf or destroy microbes; and interferons released by virus-infected cells. Acquired immunity is specific and has memory: B lymphocytes produce antibodies that circulate in the blood (the humoral response), while T lymphocytes drive the cell-mediated response, which is also why transplanted tissue can be rejected.

Vaccination primes memory B and T cells so that a later infection meets a fast, strong secondary response.
