What Is the Fish Anatomy Chart Used For?

Fishes are aquatic vertebrates that breathe with gills and move with fins, and class 11 biology separates two main groups. Cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) such as sharks and rays have a skeleton of cartilage, a mouth on the underside of the head, separate gill slits with no cover, tough skin with tiny placoid scales and no air bladder, so they must keep swimming to avoid sinking. Bony fishes (Osteichthyes) such as rohu and catla have a bony skeleton, gills covered by an operculum on each side, an air bladder that regulates buoyancy and cycloid or ctenoid scales. Both groups have a two-chambered heart, with one auricle and one ventricle, and are cold-blooded.

Gills are also the example of breathing in water in the class 10 chapter on life processes: water taken in through the mouth passes over the gill filaments, where blood takes up the dissolved oxygen, and leaves through the gill openings. The lateral line along each side senses movement in the water, and the paired fins (pectoral and pelvic) and unpaired fins (dorsal, anal and caudal) steer, balance and drive the fish. Use the chart with a fish skeleton or model in college zoology, or in fisheries and aquaculture courses; the laminated surface wipes clean. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image to see which parts are labelled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Fish Anatomy Chart cover?
The structure of fishes. The listing does not say which fishes or labels are drawn; the product photograph shows the chart, and JLab can send a larger image before you order.

What size and finish is the chart?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 inches), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated with thick plastic film on both sides and fitted with plastic rollers. The text is in English only.

How does a bony fish differ from a cartilaginous fish?
A bony fish has a bony skeleton, a gill cover (operculum) and an air bladder. A cartilaginous fish such as a shark has a cartilage skeleton, separate uncovered gill slits, a mouth on the underside and no air bladder.

How does a fish breathe?
It takes water in through the mouth and passes it over the gills, where blood in the gill filaments absorbs the dissolved oxygen before the water flows out.

What is the air bladder for?
It is a gas-filled sac in bony fishes that regulates buoyancy, letting the fish hold its depth without constant swimming. Sharks and rays do not have one.

Is a fish model or skeleton included?
No. This listing covers the chart only; the Fish Skeleton and Boney Fish Model linked below are separate items.
