What Is the Dicot Stem T.S. Chart Used For?

A transverse section of a young dicot stem shows, from the outside in: an epidermis covered by a cuticle and bearing multicellular hairs; a cortex made up of a collenchymatous hypodermis, layers of parenchyma and an endodermis rich in starch grains (the starch sheath); a pericycle with patches of sclerenchyma; vascular bundles arranged in a ring, each conjoint, collateral and open, with a strip of cambium between xylem and phloem; medullary rays between the bundles; and a large central pith. The ring of open bundles is what later allows a dicot stem to thicken by secondary growth. Identifying these regions in a stained section of sunflower or a similar herbaceous stem is part of class 11 practical work.

Use the chart as the reference while students cut and stain their own sections, then compare it with the monocot stem chart. The laminated face wipes clean, and the chart rolls up on its plastic rollers for storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the endodermis of a dicot stem called a starch sheath?
Its cells are rich in starch grains, so in a section stained with iodine the endodermis shows up as a distinct ring. That is why textbooks describe it as the starch sheath.

What does an open vascular bundle mean?
An open bundle has cambium between its xylem and phloem. The cambium can divide to form new xylem and phloem, which is how dicot stems grow thicker by secondary growth; monocot stems have closed bundles with no cambium.

What are the main differences between dicot and monocot stem sections?
In a dicot stem the bundles form a ring around a large pith and there is a clear cortex, endodermis and pericycle, with a collenchymatous hypodermis. A monocot stem has bundles scattered through ground tissue, a sclerenchymatous hypodermis and no distinct cortex or pith.

What size is the chart, and what is it printed on?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and fitted with plastic rollers.

How many charts must I order, and when are they dispatched?
At least 10 units. Each chart is inspected visually before it is packed, and dispatch is usually within 7–10 working days; for export, transit time depends on the destination and shipping method.
